چکیده

Technological progress, responsible for the declining costs of computers, coupled with the advancement of computer adaptive software have promoted computer adaptive testing (CAT) in higher education, offering alternatives to the conventional paper and pencil examinations. The CAT testing process, statistically conducted through Item Response Theory, is able to react to the individual examinee, keeping examinees on target with test items of an appropriate level of difficulty. The basic goal of adaptive computer tests is to ensure the examinee is supplied questions that are challenging enough for them but not too difficult, which would lead to frustration and confusion. The paper presents a CAT system realized in MATLAB along with its development steps. The application can run from a Matlab command window, or it is possible to make a stand-alone application that does not require the installation of Matlab. The questions are written in a .txt file. This allows the examiner to easily modify and extend the question database, without specific knowledge of the syntax of any programming language. The only requirement is for the examiner (but it is only required) to follow a pre-determined format of question writing. The program enables the testing of student knowledge in C++.

A library of templates for exercise construction in an adaptive assessment system

Conventional computer testing systems usually offer items (questions) where examinees can only select one or more answers. In these systems, there is a fixed number of items to be administered to students. This implies that all students must answer the same number of questions, independently of their knowledge level. By contrast, adaptive testing systems are able to make more accurate predictio...

SIETTE: A Web-Based Tool for Adaptive Testing

Student assessment is a very important issue in educational settings. The goal of this work is to develop a web-based tool to assist teachers and instructors in the assessment process. Our system is called SIETTE, and its theoretical bases are Computer Adaptive Testing and Item Response Theory. With SIETTE, teachers worldwide can define their tests, and their students can take these tests on-li...

An Analysis of Attention to Student - Adaptive Hints in an Educational Game

We present a user study to investigate which factors affect student attention to user-adaptive hints during interaction with an educational computer game. The game is Prime Climb, an educational game designed to provide individualized support for learning number factorization skills in the form of hints based on a model of student learning. We use eye-tracking data to capture user attention pat...

Towards Efficient Item Calibration in Adaptive Testing

Reliable student models are vital for the correct functioning of Intelligent Tutoring Systems. This means that diagnosis tools used to update the student models must be also reliable. Through adaptive testing, student knowledge can be inferred. The tests are based on a psychometric theory, the Item Response Theory. In this theory, each question has a function assigned that is essential for dete...

Computer Adaptive Testing: Comparison of a Probabilistic Network Approach with Item Response Theory

Bayesian and probabilistic networks are claimed to offer powerful approaches to inferring an individual’s knowledge state from evidence of mastery of concepts or skills. A typical application where such tools can be useful is Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). Bayesian networks have been proposed as an alternative to the traditional Item Response Theory (IRT), which has been the prevalent CAT app...
